MA Recreational Cannabis News & Events

marijuana massachusetts

In December of 2021, the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission (CCC) officially announced that the state sold $2.3 billion worth of cannabis since the first adult-use dispensaries opened in 2018. With nearly 30,000 combined employees in the recreational and medical cannabis sectors—and the average price per ounce being the lowest it’s been since the start of adult-use sales in the state—things continue to look up for the Commonwealth heading into 2022.

Keeping in mind we still have a long way to go in perfecting our legal cannabis system, new announcements and laws in Massachusetts make the future of marijuana more promising.

In this blog, we’ll go over some of these newer happenings including the arrival of home delivery and the allowance of hemp-derived products in Massachusetts dispensaries.

Marijuana Home Delivery Services

The Cannabis Control Commission finally announced in June of last year that eligible applicants can now seek pre-certification and licensure as marijuana delivery operators—a business type that will aid and be an important part of an equitable industry in the state.

The new “marijuana delivery operator” licenses created will be available exclusively to participants in the CCC’s social equity program and economic empowerment applicants for the first three years. The new license allows its holder to buy products wholesale from growers and manufacturers and deliver them to their own customers.

The companies that were among the first to benefit from the new statewide program launched operations late in 2021. Lantern, a sister company of the popular alcohol delivery service Drizly, is now serving the Boston area. While ‘Your Green Package’, has hit the road in the Greater Northampton area in the western end of the state.

Mass Permits Hemp Sales For Marijuana Retailers

Hemp growers in Massachusetts are now able to sell hemp extracts and smokable flower to over 200 licensed marijuana retailers in the state. This move will allow dispensaries to serve a wider selection of consumers.

The new rule that took effect last October gives Massachusetts hemp farmers instructions for testing and labeling their products for sale to adult-use or medical marijuana shoppers. The change applies only to farmers growing hemp within the state.

These new rules require hemp products sold to carry labels that include manufacturer name and address, THC, and CBD concentrations, and lastly a warning stating that the product “has not been tested, analyzed, or approved by the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources or the FDA.”
