Exploring the Benefits of Minor Cannabinoids: CBN

The CBN molecule depicted on a black background.

When you think of cannabinoids, you probably think of the most well-known and studied cannabinoids, THC (Delta-9 Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol). But did you know over 113 different cannabinoids have been isolated in the plant? These lesser known, minor cannabinoids can have just as much of an impact on your cannabis experience as the heavyweights.

In a previous blog, we talked about what minor cannabinoids are and why they are important. In this blog, we are going to spotlight one minor cannabinoid in particular: CBN.

Intro to CBN

CBN stands for cannabinol, a cannabinoid found in the cannabis sativa plant. It is produced through the natural breakdown and oxidation of THC, as cannabis flowers are exposed to air or light.

CBN produces a milder experience than THC, and does not produce the intoxicating high associated with classic cannabis consumption. CBN is thought to have sedative properties that could relieve conditions like insomnia and promote relaxation and pain relief.

However, there is a lot of misinformation circulating about this cannabinoid, and we actually have limited scientific knowledge and insufficient evidence on its potential benefits and uses.

According to the Sleep Foundation:

“Because there is limited research on the use of CBN, there are no research-based guidelines for using cannabinol as a sleep aid. This can make it difficult to determine proper dosing when using products such as CBN oil or CBN gummies for sleep.

If you are interested in using CBN or other cannabinoids to help you sleep, talk to your doctor first. Your doctor may be able to help you find a reputable product, set a safe dose, and determine whether CBN is appropriate based on your individual needs.”

Let’s move on now to talk about how CBN interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system.

How CBN Works

CBN works by interacting with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex network of receptors and neurotransmitters found throughout the body. Specifically, CBN binds to CB1 receptors in the brain, which are known to play a key role in regulating sleep and other physiological processes.

By binding to these receptors, CBN is thought to increase the amount of GABA, a neurotransmitter that promotes relaxation and reduces anxiety.

While more research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms by which CBN works, its interactions with the ECS suggest that it may have a wide range of therapeutic applications.

Benefits of CBN

CBN is thought to have a number of potential benefits, which have led to increasing interest in its therapeutic applications:

In addition to its effects on sleep, CBN may also have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a potentially useful tool for managing pain and inflammation. Some research also suggests that CBN may act as an appetite stimulant and help to alleviate nausea, making it a potential treatment for conditions such as cancer or HIV/AIDS.

Finally, evidence suggests that CBN may have antibacterial properties, making it a potentially useful tool for combating bacterial infections. While more research is needed to fully understand the benefits of CBN, its diverse range of potential applications makes it an area of great interest in the medical and scientific communities.

CBN & the Entourage Effect

The entourage effect suggests that the combined effect of multiple cannabinoids, terpenes, and other plant compounds can produce a stronger therapeutic effect than any one compound on its own.

In a 2019 study conducted on rats, CBN use showed relief in muscle and joint pain conditions like fibromyalgia. The study also noted that pain relief was better when CBD and CBN were used together.

This means that minor cannabinoids like CBN, along with other cannabinoids and plant compounds, may work together to produce a more potent and effective therapeutic effect than any single compound used in isolation.

How to Consume CBN

There are several options for consuming CBN, including tinctures, capsules, and edibles. Tinctures, which are liquid extracts of cannabis, is a popular method of consuming CBN as they allow for precise dosing and fast absorption.

As with any cannabis product, it is important to start with a low dose and gradually increase until the desired effect is achieved. Dosage recommendations for CBN vary depending on the individual, the product, and the intended use.

CBN & the Future of Cannabis Research

CBN represents an exciting area of potential research in the field of cannabis. While the benefits of CBN have been studied to some extent, there is still much to be learned about this cannabinoid and its effects on the body. Further research into the mechanisms by which CBN works, as well as its potential therapeutic applications, could lead to new treatments for a range of conditions.

As the legal and regulatory landscape around cannabis continues to evolve, there is likely to be increasing interest in exploring the potential benefits of CBN and other cannabinoids, as well as new methods for consuming and administering these compounds.

Ultimately, continued research into CBN and cannabis more broadly has the potential to transform the field of medicine and improve the lives of countless individuals.
